Job Summary: Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This position involves providing specialized care for pediatric patients with oncological and hematological conditions in a teaching hospital setting. The role includes managing complex patient needs and working collaboratively within a team-oriented, family-centered environment.
Job Details:
Schedule: Night shifts, 12 hours per shift, with a minimum of 36 hours per week.
Required Qualifications: Valid licensure in the relevant state, with BLS (Basic Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certifications preferred; Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Nurses (APHON) chemo certification required; a minimum of 1 year of experience in pediatric hematology and oncology or pediatric acute care; strong pediatric assessment and critical thinking skills, experience with central line management and chemo administration.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience working with leukemia, solid tumors, sickle cell crisis, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, behavioral health, and adolescent medicine.
Unit Information: The unit has 16 beds on Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (PHO) and 16 beds on Pediatric Adolescent Medicine (PA), with patient ratios of approximately 1:3-4 for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and 1:4-5 for Pediatric Adolescent Medicine, averaging 14-32 patients daily.
Support within the Department: Vital signs, activities of daily living, safety rounding, and intake/output management are supported by CNAs; additional support from receptionists, charge nurses, phlebotomists, resource nurses, and 24/7 hospitalists and intensivists.
Technology/Equipment: Epic electronic medical record system, Alaris IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and unit-specific monitors.
Orientation: Two days of departmental orientation, including facility and unit-specific training.
Additional Information: Work routinely between Pediatric Adolescent Medicine and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology units, excluding the Pediatric Emergency Department; scrubs are royal blue or pediatric-appropriate; free parking; team-oriented, supportive culture emphasizing professional growth, safety, and family-centered care.
