Description:
This position is for the PACU unit.
The unit has 21 beds and accommodates both Phase 1 and Phase 2 recovery, as well as moderate sedation recovery.
The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3 in pre-op, 1:2 in Phase 1, and 1:3 in Phase 2.
Common cases include typical anesthesia recoveries and sedation for outpatient and inpatient procedures.
The unit often handles heart catheterizations, pacemaker placements, ablations, and electrophysiology studies.
Structural heart procedures such as TAVRs, LAAOs, and mitral clips are also common.
Vascular surgeries include carotid endarterectomies, carotid stenting, and AAA repairs.
Thoracic procedures include hiatal hernia repairs, lung resections, and mediastinoscopies.
Cardiac surgeries such as CABGs and valve replacements are performed but do not involve recovering open sternotomy patients.
Nurses read telemetry strips and have a general awareness of respiratory therapy equipment, although respiratory therapists manage setups.
Patients in the intensive care unit may occasionally be recovered in PACU.
There are perioperative care assistants available, with 3 to 5 on duty per day covering the entire unit.
Shifts include a combination of three 12-hour shifts per week, with one required shift from 08:00 to 20:30.
Call shifts are assigned as needed, including weekends and hospital-recognized holidays, with a one-hour response time.
There is no requirement to float to other units.
Scrub color and dress code are provided in ceil blue.
Expect a one-week orientation and a survival guide will be provided.
Cancellation policy allows for 2 shifts per 13-week assignment and 1 shift for assignments less than 13 weeks.
Charting system used is EPIC.
A BSN is not required.
The trauma level is 1 with an acute care setting.
