Description:
The unit has 20 pre-op bays and 24 PACU/Phase II bays.
All staff rotate throughout Pre-op, PACU, Phase II, and boarders.
The nurse-patient ratio for Pre-op is 1:3; for PACU it is 1:2; and for Phase II it is 1:3.
Common cases include adult and pediatrics in general surgery, plastics, dental/ENT/maxillofacial, urology, neurosurgery, surgical oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic/ortho trauma, joint replacements, OB/GYN, thoracic, regional acute pain, and bariatrics.
Experience with EMR system is required.
Charge nurses typically do not take assignments but can when necessary.
Patient care assistants are available in pre-op, PACU, and Phase II.
Experience with respiratory therapy equipment is required.
ICU patients do recover in PACU unless there is a ready ICU bed.
Nurses are expected to read strips.
Rotating shifts may include weekends and nights as needed.
Pre-op shifts start as early as 5:30 AM, while PACU shifts may start at various times between 7:30 AM and 10:00 AM.
Call requirements vary per schedule, typically around 20-24 hours per month.
Employees select their own call shifts based on availability.
There may be a requirement to work one holiday shift and one holiday call shift per season.
Call response time is 1 hour.
Floating to other pre/post departments may be required.
Scrubs are provided by the hospital.
Unit-specific orientation includes 1 day for Pre-op, 1 day for PACU, and 1 day for Phase II.
