Key Responsibilities
  • Provide pre-operative and post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nursing care across a combined Pre-Op/PACU unit staffed 24/7, serving a daily census of 35–50 patients across all age groups including pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics
  • Perform pre-operative assessments, patient education, history and physical review, consent obtainment, and preparation of all surgical patients prior to procedures
  • Monitor and manage patients in Phase I PACU recovery following a broad range of surgical specialties including bariatrics, cardiothoracic, neuro/spine, ortho, plastics, urology, vascular, GYN, and robotics
  • Perform clinical skills including IV insertion, straight urinary catheterization, airway assessment, dysrhythmia recognition and management, and pain assessment and management
  • Participate in on-call requirements of 2–3 shifts per month with a 30-minute callback requirement; cover off-hours recovery needs including IR, EP, Cath, and CT/MRI patients as needed
  • Float within Surgical Services between Pre-Op and Post-Op settings, including occasional float to outpatient ortho or same-day surgery areas
Required Qualifications
  • Active California RN license in hand at time of submittal
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in PACU, Pre-Op, ER, or ICU; prior travel nursing experience required
  • Both Pre-Op and PACU experience required
  • Current ACLS, BLS, PALS, and NIH certifications required
  • Phase I PACU competency required
  • Proficiency in EPIC electronic health records preferred; charting experience in EPIC strongly desired
  • Permanent address must be located more than 50 miles from the facility
Preferred Experience / Skills
  • Experience in ambulatory/outpatient and inpatient surgical settings; trauma center background (Level 1 or Level 2) preferred
  • Familiarity with robotic surgery programs, total joint replacement, bariatric procedures (gastric bypass, sleeve, lap band), and complex surgical specialties including neuro/spine, vascular, and thoracic
  • Competency with arterial line management, chest tube management, PCA pump management, central line care, PICC line care, blood product administration, and end-tidal CO2 monitoring
  • Previous charge nurse experience preferred; experience with malignant hyperthermia protocols, RASS scoring, and anesthesia types including epidural, spinal, nerve blocks, and MAC
