Description:
The unit consists of 30 beds.
It is divided into 22 acute care beds and 8 stepdown beds.
Patient ratios are 6:1 on acute care and 4:1 on neuro stepdown.
Staffing includes 1 RN in charge for the entire unit, 1-2 techs, and a unit secretary.
Equipment utilized includes vital sign machines, high flow oxygen, chest tubes, suction devices, and various drips on the acute care side.
On the neuro stepdown side, equipment includes Vapotherm, BiPAP, trachs, and titrating cardiac drips.
Documentation is done via Meditech.
Scheduling includes mandatory weekend shifts.
Experienced nurses may float after orientation.
Patient experience requirements emphasize bedside shift reports, personal connections, and daily huddles.
Required certifications are BLS for acute care and BLS/ACLS for neuro stepdown.
Dress code includes black, any shade of blue or gray, and any color scrubs on Fridays.
Common procedures performed include lumbar punctures and chest tube placements.
The unit offers recognition through ICARE, a shout-out board, and employee of the month awards.
This unit is an excellent starting point for those interested in moving to ICU.
