Job Title: RN - PCU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years required License: Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, Basic Cardiac Rhythm Must-Have: Strong clinical assessment and medical-surgical nursing skills Experience with tracheostomy care, chest tube management, IV insertion, and central line management Ability to manage various types of drips and titrate to heart rate Experience with cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation Knowledge in wound care and post-operative monitoring Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse in a Progressive Care Unit. The facility has 637 licensed beds and is a Level 1 Trauma center. It also serves as a teaching hospital and is designated as a Chest Pain and Stroke Center. The unit consists of 24 beds with an average census of 24 patients. The primary patient population includes cardiothoracic and vascular surgical patients, both pre-operative and post-operative. The secondary patient population includes cases from cardiology, pulmonology, and general medical/surgical backgrounds. Common patient conditions include acute and chronic diseases as well as co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and infections. Patient ratios are typically 1:4-6 for RNs and LPNs, with 2-3 CNAs per shift. Key skills required for this position include care coordination with interdisciplinary teams, discharge planning, and patient education particularly on renal and fluid management. Support staff includes CNAs who assist with vital signs, baths, feeding, and ambulation of patients. There is also a resource team that assists with discharge and a 24/7 respiratory therapy service. Central telemetry monitoring is available, and EMR systems are used throughout the facility. The scheduling includes weekend rotations and holiday expectations. The unit culture is described as busy but focused on teamwork.
