Job Title: RN - PCU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Night Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 2 years required License: Valid Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS required Must-Have: Strong clinical assessment and med-surg nursing skills Description: The position is for a Registered Nurse in the Progressive Care Unit. The facility has a total of 637 licensed beds and is a Level 1 Trauma designation. It serves as a Teaching Hospital and includes a Chest Pain Center and a Stroke Center. The Progressive Care Unit has a total of 24 beds with a typical census of 24 patients. The primary patient population consists of cardiothoracic and vascular surgical patients, both pre-operative and post-operative. Secondary patient populations include cardiology, pulmonology, and general medical/surgical patients. Some patients may require pre and post-operative care related to Left Ventricular Assist Devices. Common patient co-morbidities include diabetes, hypertension, infections, congestive heart failure, and electrolyte imbalances. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-6, and there are LPNs and CNAs supporting the nursing staff. CNA responsibilities include vital signs checks, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating patients, and assisting with turning patients. The unit is supported by a charge nurse, resource nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members, including respiratory therapists and hospitalists. Nurses are responsible for wound care, post-operative monitoring, cardiac monitoring, and telemetry interpretation. Nurse duties also include care coordination and discharge planning, focusing particularly on renal and fluid management. Technological resources include an electronic medical record system and various medical equipment such as IV pumps and cardiac telemetry monitors. Nurses will be expected to work weekends, with approximately 5-6 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule. Holiday work is required, including one shift for each major holiday. The unit has a strong team culture, with a busy environment requiring collaboration and teamwork among staff members.
