Job Title: RN - PCU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Night Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum 2 years preferred License: Valid RN License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS required; National Medical-Surgical Certification preferred Must-Have: Strong clinical assessment and medical-surgical nursing skills for a Level 1 Trauma setting Experience with tracheostomy care, chest tube management, IV insertion, and care Knowledge of cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse specializing in the Progressive Care Unit. The facility is a Level 1 Trauma hospital with 637 licensed beds. It includes a Chest Pain Center and a Stroke Center. The unit consists of 24 beds with a census of 24 patients. The primary patient population includes cardiothoracic and vascular surgical patients, both pre-operative and post-operative. The secondary patient population includes cardiology, pulmonology, and general medical and surgical patients. Common diagnoses include acute and chronic diseases, as well as co-morbidities typical of the medical-surgical population, such as diabetes and hypertension. The nurse's responsibilities include coordinating care with an interdisciplinary team. Discharge planning and patient education are essential aspects of the role, especially regarding renal and fluid management. Patient ratios are approximately 1:4-6 for RNs and LPNs. Certified Nursing Assistants are available to assist with various patient care tasks. The role requires strong communication skills for interaction with patients and their families. A charge nurse oversees unit operations, and resources such as respiratory therapists and hospitalists are available 24/7. The unit uses EMR software and various medical technologies for patient monitoring and care. Weekend rotations and holiday work are expected as part of scheduling responsibilities.
