Description:
Community-based hospital located in an urban area.
351 licensed beds, no trauma designation.
Teaching hospital with a chest pain center and stroke center.
The unit has 18 beds with an average daily census of 18.
Patient types include general medical patients requiring continuous monitoring.
Patients will have NSTEMI or be status post STEMI, cardiac interventional procedures, electrophysiology procedures, thoracic surgery, heart failure, and post-stroke.
Additional patient types include general, vascular, or immediate thoracic surgical patients.
These patients will require continuous cardiac, respiratory, or hemodynamic support.
Pharmacological titration of cardiac anti-arrhythmic drips is necessary.
Care for post-operative day 2 patients post open heart surgery is required.
Patients with respiratory failure requiring medium or high flow oxygen devices or non-invasive positive pressure ventilation are included.
Patient ratios are 1:3 or 1:4 depending on interventions.
Responsibilities include continuous cardiac monitoring and interpretation of rhythm.
Support within the department includes CNAs and charge nurses.
A rapid response team and respiratory therapy are available 24/7.
Technology used includes EPIC for EMR and Philips Intellivue monitors.
All patient rooms have in-room monitors.
Orientation will consist of departmental specific training with an RN preceptor.
Weekend rotation every other weekend and holiday expectations are outlined.
Unit culture emphasizes teamwork and collaboration.
