Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Stepdown Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Days Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 2 years in acute care License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Pass an EKG competency exam upon arrival Description: The unit consists of 12 beds. Patients typically present with respiratory failure, sepsis, stroke, DKA, and post-procedural care after heart cath or aortogram/arteriogram. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3. Required skills include management and placement of central venous lines, management of foley catheters, tube feedings through NGT or PEG, and care of arterial lines. Diabetes management and drip titration of medications such as Levophed, Amiodarone, Cardizem, and Insulin are expected. The charge nurse will also take on a patient assignment. There is no phlebotomy available on the unit, but there is a resource nurse based on staffing levels. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7, and a hospitalist is present around the clock. The electronic medical record system is Meditech Expanse. IV pumps used are Alaris, and medication dispensing is managed via Pyxis. Travelers may be required to float to other units, including a stroke unit and med-surg, based on needs. Weekend rotations will be every other weekend. The schedule will alternate between 4 days one week and 3 days the next. Employees may work varied rotations, such as 3/2 or 5/2. Time off requests for up to 7 days can be accommodated but must be included in the contract extension for full weeks. Requests for time off are limited to one weekend per contract. There is no on-call requirement. Work is expected on 2 out of 3 major holidays. Uniform colors include pewter for scrubs, with allowable t-shirt colors of gray, white, or black. Professionalism is essential, with no cell phone use in patient care areas and no earbuds permitted. Eating at the desk is not allowed.
