The unit specializes in medical oncology with patients experiencing high acuity levels. Nurses will have the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population, including adolescents and adults. An orientation period is required, which includes initial training followed by on-unit preceptorship. The schedule is self-scheduled, allowing nurses to enter their preferred hours and shifts. Patient diagnoses include solid tumors, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology. Nurses will care for patients using advanced telemetry monitoring systems. Experience in infection prevention protocols and patient falls is essential. Skills in interpreting dysrhythmias and managing cardiac drips are required. Candidates must be able to perform blood product administration and manage central lines. Experience with PCA pumps and continuous bladder irrigation is beneficial. Special equipment used on the unit includes telemetry monitors and various infusion pumps. Flexibility is necessary, as nurses may float to other units of equivalent or lower acuity levels. Weekend shifts will vary based on unit needs, and staffing ratios aim for 1:4-5 in med surg telemetry and 1:3 in PCU. Previous travel nursing experience is preferred but not required. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential for success in this role. Candidates must complete required certifications and demonstrate proficiency in nursing skills specific to oncology.
