Description:
This is a mixed acuity unit that cares for both PCU and Medical Surgical patients.
The unit is known for being very busy with surgical cases.
All permanent staff is trained in PCU practices.
The goal staffing ratio is 1:4 but can adjust to 1:5 based on unit needs.
Weekend requirements are variable depending on the needs of the unit.
There is no set or blocked scheduling available for staff.
All travelers may be required to float within their scope of practice.
If a rotating night contract is accepted, shifts may include days, nights, or a combination.
Shift assignments will be reviewed every four weeks, but changes are not guaranteed.
The patient population includes adults and geriatrics.
Common diagnoses include surgical oncology, hepatobiliary, colorectal, and plastics cases.
Special procedures include chemotherapy, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, oncologic emergencies, insulin drips, and heparin drips.
There is a heavy emphasis on infection prevention and fall protocols.
Key skills required include BiPAP/CPAP management, cardiac telemetry, chest tube care, and interpretation of dysrhythmias.
Experience with computerized charting is essential.
The unit is supported by various interdisciplinary teams, including IV teams, physical therapy, respiratory services, and pharmacy.
