High acuity PCU patient experience.
Description:
This position involves caring for patients on a progressive care unit with a focus on medical oncology.
The unit has a high acuity of PCU level care with a small number of medical-surgical patients.
Patients typically include those with solid tumors and orthopedic or thoracic oncology diagnoses.
Equipment used includes telemetry monitors, bladder scanners, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds, continuous bladder irrigation systems, and PCA pumps.
Nurses working in this role will follow infection prevention protocols and manage patient falls.
Required skills include the interpretation of dysrhythmias and the ability to manage rapid response teams.
Candidates should be experienced in the administration of blood products, central line care, and management as well as peripheral line care and management.
Additional skills include PICC line management, IV starts, and managing various cardiac drips without titration.
Candidates should also be able to care for chest tubes and manage high flow nasal cannula, BiPAP, and CPAP therapies.
Monitoring and interpreting arterial blood gases (ABGs) is also expected.
While pediatric patients are cared for within this unit, experience with pediatric cases is not required for agency nurses.
A heavy focus will be on patient safety, and staff will be required to float within units of equivalent or lower levels of acuity.
This role supports an interdisciplinary team, including physical therapy, respiratory services, radiology, and pharmacy.
The nurse-patient ratio will vary between 1:3 for PCU and 1:4-5 for medical-surgical telemetry.
