The unit provides care for adult and pediatric patients, who are typically 15 years and older. Staffing may involve floating to medical-surgical areas based on the highest need. The unit emphasizes hourly rounding and responsiveness to patient needs. A supportive environment includes nursing assistants, charge nurses, educators, care managers, social workers, dieticians, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.
