Currently, the unit utilizes adult and adolescent beds, specializing in treating patients with various mental health conditions. Common diagnoses include depression, anxiety, substance abuse, psychosis, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, among others. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 3:1 for adults and 6:1 for adolescents. Travelers may work with both adult and pediatric patients but will be separated by a door. Experience with IVs is very rare, and travelers are not required to have this skill. There may not always be a charge nurse or house supervisor on each shift, but someone will fill those duties as needed. Physical restraints are used rarely, and seclusion may be employed. Mental health technicians/aids will be available, with a ratio of 2 aides for every 9 patients admitted. Occupational therapy services are available Monday through Friday, and social work is also part of the care team. Respiratory therapy is available on-site for patients needing oxygen or treatments. There are no telemetry or monitor technicians, so nurses are not required to read their own telemetry strips. Shifts offer self-scheduling based on seniority in a union setting, and attempts will be made to accommodate block scheduling. Weekend and holiday requirements are every other weekend and every other holiday, respectively. There are no call or standby requirements for this position. Nurses are expected to float throughout the facility as needed. Dress code is business casual, with no restrictions on colors except for maroon. Unit orientation involves two shifts of training for new staff. This is the only child/adolescent inpatient unit in the region, located on the fourth floor of the facility. Safety measures include emergency buttons for code blue and a security presence in-house. Nurses are expected to engage actively in patient care, including participating in 15-minute rounds. Attributes that contribute to a nurse's success in this unit include patience and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Candidates must adhere to specific proximity rules for eligibility. Requests for time off must be submitted upfront, with limitations on additional requests during the contract period. The charting system used is EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position. This role is situated in a Level 2 trauma care setting. The focus is on acute care within a nursing division.
