Observes, assesses, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients. Makes nursing rounds and takes and records vital signs. Prepares and administers prescribed medications and treatment plans. Monitors restrained patients on a timely basis and provides immediate medical attention to emergencies. Arranges transportation to hospital emergency rooms when necessary. Counsels patients regarding the need for medical referrals. Schedules, assigns, and reviews work of lower-level staff as assigned. Participates in staff development and education. Reviews care plans written by staff. Trains and orients new employees. Responsible for all health care of bedridden inmates. Makes rounds and evaluates care needed and rendered. Creates care plans and teaches healthcare principles. Administers medications, including narcotics. Performs specialized procedures such as IV therapy, chemotherapy, and dialysis. Organizes and oversees emergency response teams. Directs healthcare staff assigned to the area. Acts as a lead worker in charge of one assigned shift in the absence of senior staff. Assists physicians in giving diagnostic health evaluations. Performs clerical tasks such as charting and documenting medical information. Completes required reports. Documents Medicaid information and orders supplies. Maintains inventory of controlled drugs and medications. Arranges for outpatient clinic appointments and medical examinations. Performs administrative tasks and serves as a liaison within the organization. Conducts and/or attends meetings. Serves as an instructor on occasion. Participates in problem-solving teams or groups. Major Worker Characteristics: Knowledge of professional registered nursing procedures. Knowledge of state and federal regulations, policies, and procedures related to nursing. Ability to write meaningful, concise, and accurate reports. Ability to gather, collate, and classify information. Demonstrates physical fitness.
