Description:
Department: Psychiatric (Adult)
The unit has 26 beds.
During the day, there are 4 RNs with patient ratios of 1:6-7.
During nights, there are 3 RNs with patient ratios of 1:8.
There are 5 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) during days and evenings, with 3 PCTs at night.
Common diagnoses include schizophrenic, bipolar, schizoaffective, substance abuse, depression, bipolar, borderline personality, and intellectually challenged population for placement issues.
Patients are admitted from the emergency room and must be medically stable.
No detox or rehab patients are admitted to this unit.
RNs may be asked to perform IM injections and phlebotomy, but IVs are not typically present.
Charge Nurses and Assistant Nurse Care Coordinators manage the unit 24 hours a day.
Travelers could potentially be placed in a charge role.
Support is available from staff at all hours.
Physical restraints are avoided by utilizing de-escalation techniques, with prior experience preferred for RNs.
Patient Care Technicians perform safety checks, room checks, vital sign assessments, blood glucose checks, and assist nursing staff.
Respiratory Therapy is not available; RNs manage CPAP and BiPAP as needed.
Shifts for RNs are from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM, and for PCTs, the shifts are from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with variations in evening and night shifts.
Travelers are encouraged to maintain flexibility in scheduling.
Weekend requirements involve every other weekend, and holiday rotation may require attendance for 2-3 holidays a year.
Travelers are first to float to any adolescent or adult psychiatric unit as needed.
Scrub colors are Royal Blue for RNs, Kelly Green for LPNs, and Eggplant/Burgundy for PCTs.
Unit-specific orientation lasts 2-4 days with a preceptor.
There is a cancellation policy allowing for 1 shift cancellation per 4-week assignment with no penalty.
Charting is completed using Allscripts.
Required certifications include ACLS, BLS, and PALS.
