RN Telemetry – Emergency Department / MS-Tele

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled RN Telemetry professional for an ED-based telemetry assignment. Strong cardiac telemetry experience is required. This position primarily cares for patients who are holding in the Emergency Department while awaiting placement on an inpatient unit, with the patient population consisting primarily of Medical-Surgical/Telemetry patients.

Important Telemetry Requirement

This is a Telemetry-focused position and requires strong cardiac telemetry skills.

Candidates must be able to:

• Read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips independently
• Recognize and respond to dysrhythmias
• Manage cardiac telemetry patients
• Safely titrate cardiac drips according to physician orders and established parameters
• Demonstrate strong knowledge of cardiac medications and monitoring

Preferred Experience: Approximately 2 years of strong cardiac telemetry experience.

Facility & Unit Details

• Facility Locations: CRMC / MGMC
• CRMC ED: 60 beds
• MGMC ED: 31 beds
• Typical RN-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
• Primary Patient Population: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry patients holding in the ED while awaiting inpatient placement
• Patients will generally be more telemetry-focused than traditional medical-surgical
• No travel experience required for MS/Telemetry travelers

Required Certifications

• BLS – Required
• ACLS – Required

Cardiac Drips

RNs are required to titrate cardiac drips according to physician orders and established parameters.

Common drips include:

• Cardizem
• Heparin
• Amiodarone

Candidates should have documented experience managing and adjusting cardiac drips safely.

Telemetry Monitoring

• Nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting cardiac rhythm strips
• No monitor technician is available in the ED
• Strong independent telemetry assessment skills are required

Staffing & Support

• Charge Nurse: ED Charge RN
• Patient Care Technicians: ED PCTs available
• Respiratory Equipment: No ventilators on the unit

Schedule

• 12-hour shifts
  • 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• Self-scheduling: Available, although scheduling practices may change based on operational needs
• Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
• Holiday Requirement: Rotating holidays with permanent staff
• Call/Standby: None

Floating

Travelers may be required to float based on staffing needs to:

• Medical-Surgical units
• Telemetry units
• Overflow units
• CRMC Emergency Department
• MGMC Emergency Department

Flexibility to work across these areas is required.

Orientation

• 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation
• Orientation will be focused on Med/Surg/Telemetry at the primary campus.

Dysrhythmia Exam & SIM Lab

Dysrhythmia Exam

• Travelers must successfully complete a dysrhythmia exam through UNA prior to starting the assignment.
• Maximum of 2 attempts
• Failure results in DNU status for 6 months for CSH AZ and CSH Sacramento regions.

Day 1 SIM Lab

• A pass/fail SIM Lab is required on Day 1 of orientation.
• Failure may result in the traveler being sent home and placed on DNU status for 6 months.

Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate strong clinical competency during both assessments.

ED Support Responsibilities

Although this is primarily a Telemetry/MS-Tele position, nurses may occasionally be asked to assist with ED patients with tasks such as:

• Obtaining vital signs
• Starting IVs
• Medication administration

Travelers will not be assigned as the primary RN for ED patient assignments.

Scrub Color

• Navy scrubs

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced Telemetry RN with a strong cardiac background, preferably with approximately 2 years of cardiac telemetry experience. The candidate should be highly proficient in rhythm interpretation, cardiac drip management, and caring for acute Medical-Surgical/Telemetry patients while remaining flexible to support ED and overflow needs.
