Telemetry RN – Unit Summary
Department: Telemetry | RN
Unit: Tele
Beds: 27 beds (expanding by 10 beds in June)
Ratios: 1 RN : 4 patients
Shift Times:
- Days: 0700–1930
- Nights: 1900–0730
Required Certifications
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years Telemetry RN experience
- Must have experience with:
- Cardiac drips
- NIH stroke assessments
- Post-cath recovery
- Chest tubes
Common Diagnoses
- CHF
- NSTEMI/STEMI
- Stroke
- Sepsis
- Diabetes
- CAD
- Renal failure
- Respiratory failure
- Pneumothorax
- Post-cath lab patients
Cardiac Monitoring / Drips
- RNs do not titrate drips
- Common drips:
- Diltiazem (set rate)
- Amiodarone (set rate)
- No:
- Epinephrine drips
- Nitro drips
Cath Lab Recovery Skills
- Sheath removal: Not required
- Preferred experience:
Monitoring
- Tele techs currently on the unit; transitioning to centralized monitoring
- RN responsibilities:
- Read/interprets telemetry
- Documents every 6 hours
- Current system: SpaceLabs
- Transitioning to Philips
Staffing Support
- Charge RN: Yes (does not take patients)
- House Supervisor: Yes
- Nurse Aides: Yes
- Ratio: approximately 1 aide : 8–9 patients
- RT manages:
- CPAP
- BiPAP
- High flow oxygen
