The nurse will work on a busy stroke/neuro/trauma step-down unit. Patient diagnoses include stroke, neurosurgery, trauma, and general medical/surgical cases. Required skills include managing lumbar drains, performing NIHSS assessments, and providing stroke education. The typical patient assignment is 1:4, which may increase depending on available resources. As part of the team, the nurse must be capable of interpreting dysrhythmias and arterial blood gases. Knowledge of high flow nasal cannula management and medication titration is essential. The nurse will engage in accessing and managing ports, central lines, and administering blood products. Patient care will involve monitoring post-operative neurosurgery and managing hemodialysis. Effective isolation precautions and PPE management are required. Experience in a telemetry setting with critical care exposure is important. Shaving for fit testing is mandatory for mask seal. Travelers must comply with OSHA respirator clearance requirements.
