Description

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Cardio Thoracic Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Active Illinois license required Certifications: BLS required, ACLS recommended Must-Have: EKG interpretation, medication titration, RN licensure, basic nursing skills Description: Unit has 70 beds. Nurse-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Common diagnoses include myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and post-operative care for lung surgeries. Familiarity with chest tubes and esophagectomy procedures is important. Registered nurses must be proficient in EKG interpretation and titration of drips, particularly Cardizem and heparin. Charge nurses are present 24/7 but do not take patient assignments. There is a house supervisor available around the clock. Patient care technicians are assigned with various ratios depending on the shift. Registered nurses are not responsible for managing invasive ventilatory support equipment except in specific circumstances. Monitor technicians are available, but nurses are required to read and interpret cardiac strips using Philips telemetry monitors. The unit operates on a 12-hour shift schedule from 0700-1930 and 1900-0730. Weekend shifts are required every other week, and holiday rotations apply. Nurses may be required to float to other general medical units as needed. Scrub colors can vary, but cartoon prints are not permitted. Specific unit orientation is typically one shift or part of a shift depending on previous experience in a similar facility.
