Description:
The department has 70 beds.
Nurse-patient ratios are Days 1:4-5 and Nights 1:5-6.
Common diagnoses include myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pacemaker/AICD placement, and various lung surgeries.
Experience with chest tubes and esophagectomies is necessary.
Registered Nurses are required to titrate drips, primarily Cardizem and heparin.
There is a charge nurse available 24/7 who rarely takes patients, along with a house supervisor present at all times.
Patient care techs are available, with Day ratios of 1:8-9, Eve ratios of 1:9-10, and Night ratios of 1:10-12.
Registered Nurses are expected to troubleshoot CPAP and BiPAP equipment and handle heated high flow in special circumstances.
Tele-monitoring is done using Phillips monitors, and nurses must read and interpret their own strips, although monitor techs are also present.
Shifts are 12 hours from 0700-1930 and 1900-0730.
Weekend requirements include working every other weekend, and holiday rotations are required throughout the year.
Nurses may be required to float to other general medical units.
Scrubs in any color are acceptable, excluding children's or cartoon prints.
Unit-specific orientation will depend on prior experience within the facility.
