Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Cardio Thoracic Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Active IL license required Certifications: BLS required, ACLS recommended Must-Have: EKG interpretation skills Medication titration experience RN licensure BLS certification Basic nursing skills Description: The unit consists of 70 beds with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Common diagnoses include myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and various lung surgeries. RNs are expected to titrate medications, mainly Cardizem and heparin. Charge nurses are present 24/7 and do not typically take patients. House supervisors are also available around the clock. Patient care technicians are present on the unit with varying ratios depending on the shift. Registered nurses are required to troubleshoot CPAP and BiPAP equipment only if it is a home regimen. RNs must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips; monitor technicians are available for support. The unit operates on 12-hour shifts, with weekend scheduling requirements of every other weekend. Holiday rotations apply, including specified holidays throughout the year. Floating to other general medical units may be required. Scrubs are flexible in color, with restrictions on children's or cartoon prints as the unit serves adults. Orientation specific to the unit is typically completed in one shift, depending on prior experience in similar settings.
