Registered Nurse - Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Telemetry

Job Summary

This is an exciting 13-week travel assignment for a dedicated Registered Nurse in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at an acute care facility in Hilo, Hawaii. The unit is a 15-bed specialized environment, comprising 3 Step-down ICU beds and 12 Telemetry beds, focusing on patients requiring close cardiac and medical monitoring.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive primary nursing care to a diverse patient population, utilizing advanced telemetry monitoring and critical assessment skills. This role involves managing patient assignments with ratios of 1:4 in PCU and 1:3 in Step-down ICU, ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care in a dynamic setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide primary nursing care, including patient assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
• Perform continuous telemetry monitoring and accurate interpretation of cardiac rhythms.
• Conduct fingerstick blood sugar monitoring and management.
• Maintain appropriate patient ratios: 1:4 for Progressive Care patients and 1:3 for Step-down ICU patients.
• Float to other acute care units as needed, including Medical, Surgical/Pediatrics, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Emergency Room (ER).

Required Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Minimum of one (1) year of recent (within the last year) acute care hospital experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or Telemetry unit.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency in telemetry monitoring and EKG interpretation.
• Competency in primary nursing care and patient assessment.
• Experience with fingerstick blood sugar management.
• Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, specifically Meditech.
• Experience with medication dispensing systems, such as Pyxis.
• Ability to operate and manage medical equipment including BIPAP and continuous cardiac monitoring systems.

Shift Details

• Shift Type: AM shifts.
• Shift Duration: 8 hours per shift.
• Days per Week: 5 days per week.
• Total Hours: Scheduled 36 hours per week following the first week of orientation.
• Call Requirements: No call required.
• Weekend Rotation: Not specified.
• Contract Length: 13 weeks.

Licensing Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Hawaii, required by the start of the assignment.
