The goal is to maximize residents’ functional abilities and independence in their activities of daily living. Essential duties and responsibilities include supporting and promoting the mission and values of the organization. The Occupational Therapist performs evaluative and therapeutic procedures under the order of a physician or other accepted healthcare provider while observing precautions, indications, and contraindications. They evaluate residents per department protocols and establish a therapeutic plan of care that includes functional long- and short-term goals. Frequency and duration of treatment are specified in addition to rehabilitation potential. They provide Activities of Daily Living (ADL) training, assisting residents with personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, dressing, oral care, and hair care. The Occupational Therapist assists with ambulation, mobility, and positioning, including transfers to and from bed/chair/toileting, using mechanical lifts as appropriate and applying proper body mechanics. They seek input from the resident and primary caregivers regarding the therapeutic plan of care. The Occupational Therapist provides consultation to the referring physician and other members of the healthcare team regarding the therapeutic and discharge needs of the resident. They attend all pertinent team meetings. Monitoring and evaluating treatment effects is essential, as is progressing the treatment program toward the functional goals established in the treatment plan of care. The Occupational Therapist modifies the treatment plan of care as necessary. Documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) includes all evaluative and therapeutic interactions with the resident per department procedures. They ensure that documentation is accessible to others on the care team, including the resident, when appropriate. The Occupational Therapist recommends and obtains appropriate assistive devices for residents, ensuring that instruction in their use is provided. Providing appropriate education to the resident or caregiver is essential, and documentation of the response to teaching is required. They refer residents appropriately to Certified Occupational Therapist Assistants, if applicable. The Occupational Therapist works collaboratively with other therapy professionals to ensure quality resident care. They understand and comply with relevant regulations and submit charges for procedures per resident visit. Supervision of assistant-level staff is provided when appropriate, considering their level of education and training. They ensure adherence to all state mandates and professional organizations' standards for using assistant-level staff. Mentorship to new staff during orientation is important, ensuring that the department orientation checklist and basic competencies are completed per departmental procedure. Maintaining department cleanliness and routine equipment cleaning is necessary. The Occupational Therapist follows all infection control procedures. They maintain required licenses, certifications, and competencies, and complete annual compliance courses on time. Other duties may be assigned as consistent with this role.
