Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/HVU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 1.5 years of nursing experience and cardiac procedural recovery skills on a mixed-acuity unit.

Details

  • Mixed-acuity unit (HVU) serving Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med-Surg patient populations
  • Patient types include direct admits, ED admits, post-cath lab, MI/NSTEMI/STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker malfunction, epicardial pacers, and serves as a backup stroke unit and medical overflow
  • Step-down level care for post-cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post-open heart surgery, post-TAVR, post-EP studies, and post-pacemaker insertion patients
  • 44-bed unit with an RN-to-patient ratio of 1:4 (can be 1:3 depending on acuity)
  • 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
  • Every-other-weekend rotation required
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Holiday coverage required on an every-other rotation
  • Floating primarily to the sister General PCU unit, with potential floats to MS/Tele or ICU for PCU-level patient care; all floating is within or below scope of practice
  • EMR: Epic; also uses Alaris pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing
  • Tele tech oversees cardiac monitoring; RN confirms strips at 6a and 6p

Requirements

  • Active RN license — South Dakota state license or Compact license required
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience required
  • PCU-level nursing experience required
  • Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG, TAVR, post-cardiac cath) required
  • Proficiency with MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine) and Heparin drips required
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation and chest tube management skills required
  • TNK administration experience preferred
  • Completion of a board of nursing-approved nursing education program required
  • 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are considered with 2+ years of experience
  • Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
  • Former permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler
  • Unit support includes CNAs (ratio 1:5–8 depending on shift), an unassigned charge nurse, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, occasional resource nurse coverage, and RT available 24/7
  • Hospitalist is in-facility 24/7 but not dedicated to the unit; no IV/VAT team on site
  • Orientation consists of 2 partial days of education followed by 3 supervised 12-hour shifts on the unit
  • RTO of up to 7 days is permitted; a full week off requires an extension; no time off is approved during the first 3 weeks of August (Sturgis Bike Rally period)
  • Required scrub color: Navy Blue
