Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position at a Level I Trauma, Magnet-designated teaching hospital, requiring ventilator/trach experience and active VA or Compact RN license.
Details
- General Medicine PCU within a large acute care hospital — a hybrid unit with 10 PCU beds and 2 ICU beds
- Patient population includes chronic trach and vent-dependent patients, with common diagnoses such as DKA, COPD, sepsis, suicide/overdose, chronic respiratory failure, and renal failure
- Dedicated 2 beds for chronic trach patients
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5 with a goal of 1:4
- Remote telemetry monitoring with tele sitting implemented to support Patient Care Tech coverage
- Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (EOW) or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week scheduling block
- Floating required within skillset
- Epic EMR experience required
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active Virginia state or Compact RN license required; pending license accepted only if candidate holds a single-state license from a non-compact state
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Ventilator and trach care experience required
- Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and emergency response
- Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
- Ability to administer cardiac drips (non-titrating)
- Respiratory support experience including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, and non-invasive airway management
- Familiarity with isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown unit environments
- Epic EMR experience required
- Two professional references required for consideration
- Copy of driver's license and Social Security card required for consideration

- Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated, academic teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
- Responsibilities include ventilator and trach care, cardiac monitoring, rapid response and code team activation, and isolation precautions
- Must be available to work one holiday during the 13-week contract
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2-week period
