Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

This unit features 56 beds and provides care for a diverse adult population with various diagnoses including congestive heart failure (CHF), acute renal failure (ARF), hepatitis, end-stage liver disease (ESLD), diabetes mellitus (DM), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), pneumonia, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremors.

Patient Ratios

• PCU/Tele RN: 1:4 (Days & Nights)
• Med/Surg RN: 1:5 (Days & Nights)
• CNA: 1:8 (Days & Nights)

Required Certifications

• RN: BLS, ACLS required for PCU & Tele
• LPN: BLS required; ACLS preferred
• CNA: Certified CNA; BLS not required

Required Education

Completion of a nursing education program approved by the board of nursing; Registered Nurse (RN) license from the South Dakota Board of Nursing.

Skills Required

Candidates should exhibit effective verbal and written communication, thorough physical assessment capabilities, strong clinical judgment, a professional bedside manner, and be strong team players with a positive attitude and adaptability.

Role Responsibilities

The RN will be responsible for:

• Cardiac and vasoactive drip titration
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• IV starts and blood product administration
• Management of CIWA, drains and tubes, indwelling and straight catheter insertion/management
• Insulin drips for both DKA and non-DKA patients
• Continuous bladder irrigation and chest tube maintenance
• Providing high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment

Support on the Unit

• CNA support with a ratio of 1:8 for both Days & Nights
• Charge nurses available 24/7
• 24/7 phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws
• Resource nurse available as staffing allows
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage in-house 24/7
• Centralized telemonitoring available 24/7
• Violent Incident Response team available

Charting System/Equipment

Experience with Epic is preferred. Other equipment includes Alaris and Omnicell.

Floating

The RN may float to adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular Unit, and ICU (depending on experience). Floating will be conducted in rotation with other travelers.

Orientation

The orientation includes 2 days of in-class/online education followed by (2) 12-hour shifts with a preceptor.

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: every other or 50% weekends per 4-week schedule
• Holiday expectations: minimum of every other holiday during the contracted timeframe
• Approval of time off: up to 7 days
• No requests for time off during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)

Additional Notes

Candidates may be expected to precept students. Monthly audits for Pre/Post Pain Scoring are conducted, with a requirement of 90% compliance.
