Key Responsibilities of the Pharmacist
  • Accept and dispense prescription medications
  • Monitor patient medication compliance and over-usage patterns
  • Ensure that the supply of medicines is within the law and appropriate for the patient
  • Accurately maintain confidential records of all patients
  • Advise patients on medicine usage, potential reactions, and answer any questions
  • Consult on non-prescription medications for storage, dosage, side effects, and drug interactions
  • Provide additional patient services like smoking cessation and cholesterol management
  • Educate patients on the proper handling of medical devices
  • Compound medications for external or internal use and prepare sterile solutions
  • Supervise pharmacy staff including technicians and clerks
  • Maintain inventory on pharmaceutical and medical supplies
  • Identify patient drug-related issues and communicate with other healthcare practitioners
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and pharmacy interns

Requirements of the Pharmacist
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree required
  • Licensed by the state pharmacy board
  • Experience with sterile compounding and IV infusions preferred
