They evaluate, plan, and implement therapeutic programs. This includes prevention, identification, correction, and alleviation of movement dysfunction. They evaluate patients’ motor and neurological capabilities. The therapist revises physical therapy programs as patients progress. They instruct patients in posture and therapeutic procedures for home use. May train therapy assistants, support staff, and students. They evaluate patients’ physical and functional status. This includes assessing the musculoskeletal system and functional mobility skills. They gather information from patient charts and discussions with patients or family. The therapist analyzes evaluation results and sets treatment goals. They select, administer, and monitor various treatments. Treatment may include modalities, therapeutic exercise, transfers, and gait training. They determine appropriate assistive devices to develop mobility skills. The therapist instructs patients and families in the care and use of equipment. They reassess patients’ response to treatment and adjust programs as needed. Coordination of treatment with families and health care disciplines is essential. Communication of treatment changes to physicians as appropriate is required. They recommend other disciplines or equipment to patients and families. Scheduling and coordinating treatment with staff and other disciplines is part of the role. Accurate and timely documentation is necessary, including evaluations and progress notes. They plan and document appropriate home programs for patients. The therapist participates in discharge planning with interdisciplinary teams. They maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field. Attending mandatory department meetings and educational programs is required. Developing positive relationships with personnel, patients, and agencies is essential. The therapist supports continuous quality improvement efforts. Assisting in recommending policies and procedures within the department is expected. They recommend new or revised procedures to increase service effectiveness. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development. Work requires a professional level of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and physical therapy. Work demands effective interpersonal skills for patient communication and instruction. Analytical ability to evaluate patients and establish therapy goals is necessary. Physical demands include the ability to stand for extended periods and lift patients frequently. Work involves proofreading and checking documents for accuracy. Ability to read and manipulate equipment dials and controls is required.
