They will provide treatment to patients as prescribed by a physician following the initial evaluation of the patient’s physical therapy needs. Treatment will relieve pain, develop or restore function, and maintain maximum performance using physical means, such as exercise, massage, heat, water, light, and electricity. The PTA will direct and aid patients in active and passive exercises, muscle re-education, gait and functional training, and activities of daily living. They will make use of equipment such as ultra-violet and infrared lamps, low voltage generation, diathermy, and ultrasonic machines. Observation, recording, and reporting to the registered Physical Therapist about the patient’s reaction to treatment and changes in the patient’s condition are required. Teaching the patient and caregivers self-care techniques and activities as appropriate is an important part of the role. The PTA will arrange for the use of available equipment. Completion and submission of accurate clinical notes and required documentation in a timely manner are expected.
