This includes in-center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and comprehensive patient care. The role involves providing sleep-related education and support to patients and families. A sleep technologist can perform duties defined for a sleep technician and provide oversight of other sleep center staff. Documentation of patient arrival, interactions, and consent for testing is required. The technologist reviews and verifies departmental orders for testing and insurance/prior authorization verification. Reviewing patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity is essential. Acquiring and documenting additional information from the patient or ordering provider may be necessary to ensure appropriateness of testing and parameters. The technologist performs routine positive airway pressure interface fitting, desensitization, and education. Preparing patients for testing according to policy involves selecting appropriate equipment per order. Routine observations during testing must be documented, per policy. Correlating physiologic data and behavioral observations facilitates scoring and interpretation of data. Equipment and physiologic calibrations must be performed to ensure quality data. Monitoring data quality is crucial to ensure recording is artifact-free. Equipment cleaning and disinfection are necessary to assure infection and quality control according to policy. Appropriate interventions, including patient safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions, must be implemented. Following "Lights On" procedures verifies the integrity of data and completeness of test documentation and patient forms. Effective working relationships should be developed and maintained. Professional and respectful communication with all internal and external customers is required. Assistance in requesting and maintaining testing supplies is part of the role. Participation in routine department tasks and orderliness of the work area is expected. Scoring sleep/wake stages and clinical events, such as respiratory and cardiac events, is necessary. Generating accurate reports involves tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. The ability to analyze complex situations and understand policy is important. Participation in quality and performance improvement initiatives is supported. Procedural protocols for multiple sleep latency and maintenance of wakefulness testing must be followed. Demonstrating knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care for all populations is required. Proficiency in distinguishing sleep states and identifying clinical events according to professional guidelines is necessary.
