Job Title: Polysomnographic Technologist Profession: Polysomnographic Technologist Specialty: Sleep Lab Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 10 hours Experience: One plus (1) years of experience in Sleep Lab License: Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) Certifications: - American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) - Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) - BLS (American Heart Association) Must-Have: - Sleep Lab Experience - Patient Care - Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) Interface Fitting - Sleep Disorder Evaluation - Diagnostic Testing Description: A sleep polysomnographic technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and home sleep apnea testing. They perform diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and offer comprehensive patient care. The technologist provides sleep-related education and support to patients and their families. They are credentialed in sleep technology and can oversee other sleep center staff. Responsibilities include documenting patient arrival and interactions, as well as obtaining consent for testing. The technologist reviews and verifies departmental orders for testing and insurance or prior authorization verification. They review patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity. If necessary, they acquire additional information from the patient or ordering provider to ensure the appropriateness of testing. Routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting, desensitization, and education are part of their duties. They prepare patients for testing according to policy and select appropriate equipment based on orders. Routine observations during testing are documented as per policy. The technologist correlates physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation of data. Equipment and physiologic calibrations are performed to ensure quality data and artifact-free recordings. They conduct equipment cleaning and disinfection, assuring infection control and compliance with quality standards. Patient safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions are implemented as needed. Lights On procedures are followed to verify data integrity and completeness of test documentation and patient forms. Effective working relationships are developed and maintained, with professional communication with internal and external customers. The technologist assists in maintaining testing supplies and participates in routine departmental tasks to ensure an orderly work area. They score sleep/wake stages and clinical events utilizing professionally accepted guidelines. Accurate reports are generated by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. They analyze complex situations and adhere to policies. Quality and performance improvement initiatives are supported and participated in. The technologist follows procedural protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency Testing and Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing. Knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care for all populations seen in the sleep lab are demonstrated. Proficiency in distinguishing sleep states and identifying clinical events according to professional guidelines is required.
