Job Title: Clinical Polysomnographic Technician Profession: Technician Specialty: Clinical Polysomnographic Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: Minimum years of experience required License: New York state Registered Polysomnographic Technician OR Respiratory Therapist license Certifications: - BLS from AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross - RPSGT Registered Polysomnographic Technologist Must-Have: - Attention to detail - Excellent communication skills - Ability to work in a non-stimulating environment - Capacity to react calmly in emergency situations - Understanding of patient confidentiality guidelines Description: Performs and is knowledgeable in polysomnographic diagnostic testing. Must have the ability to integrate a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology with sleep/wake pathology. Excellent communication skills are required for ensuring patient education, safety, and comfort. Must also discuss patient and clinical situations effectively. Attention to detail is critical since the quality of data from the polysomnogram is the responsibility of the technologist. The individual must maintain vigilance while monitoring patients. Must assimilate data from several sources and anticipate the initiation of care according to protocols. Must know when to consult a physician regarding the patient’s care. Must react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Must understand and abide by patient confidentiality guidelines. Reviews patient information in the chart and verifies the order for the study. Explains setup and testing protocols to patients or caregivers, answering any questions they may have. Sets up patients per policy and guidelines. Performs studies in accordance with policy and guidelines. Closely monitors patients for clinical and physiological events and takes appropriate actions to obtain required data. Performs Titration and Split night studies as ordered. Wakes patients when the appropriate amount of data is obtained, and when the study is completed. Removes electrodes and transducers carefully and assists patients with hygiene as necessary. Scores studies in accordance with scoring guidelines and completes all scoring in a timely manner. Completing scoring takes precedence over all other non-patient-related functions. Completes Inter Score Reliability monthly. Notifies the Medical Director or Clinical Manager of any adverse changes in patient condition. Assists in training of new personnel. Will perform other duties as assigned.
