Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care in the ED for neonates through geriatrics, including assessment, monitoring, and treatment planning.
- Perform rapid triage, initial assessment, and prioritize care in a high-acuity environment; coordinate with respiratory, radiology, phlebotomy, pharmacy, social work, rapid response, transport, and unit secretary staff.
- Monitor and interpret telemetry and 12-lead ECGs; respond to arrhythmias and rhythm changes; participate in rapid response and code events.
- Administer medications, manage IV therapy, and support patient safety and infection control protocols; document interventions in the electronic health record (Epic).
- Adhere to department and hospital protocols for patient flow, documentation, and interdisciplinary communication; ensure accurate handoffs at shift change.
- Maintain readiness for patient care across the adult and pediatric ED population, with a typical unit census and bed availability supporting efficient throughput.
Requirements
- Active NY RN license in hand at submission; submit recent Nursys, SSN, DOB, and references.
- Education: Degree from an accredited nursing program; registered nurse (RN) license in NY.
- Certifications: BLS, PALS, NIHSS; rhythm interpretation and 12-lead ECG competency; facility proctored exam requirement; Relias EKG module/exam within 72 hours of signing.
- Experience: ED experience preferred (5 years) with telemetry exposure; ACLS, triage experience, and Level 1 trauma experience considered a plus.
- Systems: Epic charting experience required; Omnicell medication system experience; Healthstream modules required (RN average 12–15 hours) to be completed by 7 a.m. the Wednesday before start.
- Conditions of participation: Flu vaccine required by 11/1 (exemption requests submitted 2 weeks prior to start); COVID-19 vaccination not required.
- Additional: Must be willing to float within the hospital per manager discretion to match skillset; pre-approved time off limited to one shift per contract.
- Local restrictions: Local candidates within 50 miles are not accepted. Excluded counties for new traveler contracts include Warren, Washington, Fulton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Albany, Columbia, Greene, Dutchess, and Ulster.
- Perm staff policy: Perm staff must be separated one year before returning as a traveler.
