Description:
Responsible for performing daily respiratory care procedures as assigned.
Includes medication administration via aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, percussion and postural drainage, non-invasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation, CPR, bedside pulmonary function screening, and arterial blood gases.
Able to perform in all emergency situations and provide intubation, if applicable.
Manages and assesses patients on mechanical and non-invasive ventilation.
Educates patients and families on issues pertinent to their care with the ventilator.
Follows through on pertinent protocols.
Manages ventilators for neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients according to protocol for each age group.
Assesses the appropriateness of therapy and makes recommendations.
Performs, assesses, and instructs the effective administration of oxygen, aerosol medications, humidification, suctioning, and chest physiotherapy.
Engages in patient and family education regarding the safe and effective use of equipment.
Performs effective airway management, supportive ventilation, and chest compressions during CPR.
Administers medications and assesses patient response.
Takes and records verbal orders for respiratory care procedures.
Obtains and processes arterial blood gases without direct supervision.
Reports results without direct supervision.
Performs charting in the electronic medical record system.
Enters orders in the electronic medical record system.
Utilizes the electronic medical record system to acknowledge and resolve all completed and canceled orders.
Completes department forms in a timely manner.
Assists in the maintenance of all respiratory care equipment.
Troubleshoots when necessary and communicates equipment needs to the supervisor.
Cleans equipment during downtime.
Supports other department members and in other hospital departments as a team player.
Follows department policies and procedures.
Serves as a resource for nursing, physicians, and respiratory students.
Evaluates, monitors, and analyzes processes and makes recommendations for quality improvement activities.
Responds to all respiratory care pages promptly.
Assists with education programs to help staff improve their knowledge, attitude, and skills.
Complies with all relevant local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Attends all required safety training programs and understands responsibilities related to job safety.
