Conduct physician-prescribed respiratory treatments utilizing invasive and non-invasive ventilatory equipment, oxygen and aerosol devices, and nebulizer devices to administer prescribed medications, humidification, ventilation, and oxygenation.
Perform chest physiotherapy, suctioning (oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal), oximetry and capnography monitoring, pulmonary function studies, and arterial puncture procedures.
Perform 12-Lead EKG, basic arrhythmia recognition, and routine review of patient chest x-rays to determine the need for further evaluation.
Assist with respiratory-related procedures including bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomies, and chest tube placement; perform tracheostomy care including insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes in both emergent and non-emergent situations.
Set up, self-test, operate, maintain, and monitor mechanical ventilation equipment; assist with preventative maintenance and repair of respiratory equipment as needed.
Document all treatments, patient responses, and respiratory therapy charges accurately in patient records; communicate effectively with attending and pulmonary physicians and participate in shift-to-shift handoff communication.
Required Qualifications
Active Respiratory Therapist license within the state of Illinois.
Current BLS and ACLS certification.
Demonstrated ability to operate invasive and non-invasive ventilatory equipment, oxygen delivery systems, and aerosol and nebulizer devices.
Proficiency in arterial puncture, endotracheal intubation via free-hand technique and/or video laryngoscope, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Ability to perform pulmonary function studies and interpret results with minimal supervision.
Preferred Experience / Skills
Experience in moderate complexity laboratory testing, including specimen handling, quality controls, and documentation in accordance with pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.
Experience with PleurX catheter drainage or similar chest drainage devices.
Strong communication skills with the ability to provide patient and family education regarding treatments, equipment, and discharge instructions.
