Provide intensive respiratory care including operation of invasive and non-invasive ventilatory equipment, oxygen and aerosol devices, and nebulizer devices as prescribed by physician.
Perform chest physiotherapy, suctioning (oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal), oximetry and capnography monitoring, pulmonary function studies, and arterial puncture.
Perform tracheostomy care including insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes (emergent and non-emergent), as well as endotracheal tube insertion and removal via free hand technique and/or video laryngoscope.
Assist with respiratory-related procedures such as bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomies, and chest tube placement; perform 12-lead EKG and basic arrhythmia recognition.
Set up, self-test, operate, and monitor mechanical ventilation equipment; assist with preventative maintenance and repair as needed.
Document all treatments, patient responses, and respiratory therapy charges accurately; communicate patient status during shift-to-shift handoff rounds and with attending and pulmonary physicians.
Required Qualifications
Active Respiratory Therapist license valid in the state of Virginia.
Current BLS and ACLS certification.
Demonstrated competency in operating invasive and non-invasive ventilatory equipment and related respiratory care devices.
Ability to perform arterial puncture and interpret results to assess ventilation efficiency.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and within the full scope of a professional respiratory therapy license.
Preferred Experience / Skills
Experience in a moderate complexity laboratory setting with knowledge of specimen handling, quality controls, and documentation protocols.
Familiarity with PleurX catheter drainage procedures or similar chest drainage devices.
