The Perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. This includes preoperative assessment and preparation, intraoperative support in the operating room, and postoperative recovery monitoring. The RN collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical techs, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes throughout the perioperative continuum.

Key Responsibilities:

Preoperative Phase:

  • Conduct patient assessments and obtain surgical histories

  • Educate patients and families on surgical procedures and post-op care

  • Verify preoperative checklists and consents

Intraoperative Phase:

  • Assist with patient positioning and prepping for surgery

  • Maintain a sterile field and ensure all surgical instruments are available and accounted for

  • Monitor patient vitals and advocate for patient safety during surgery

  • Document intraoperative care accurately

Postoperative Phase:

  • Monitor and assess patients in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

  • Manage pain, monitor vital signs, and observe for complications

  • Communicate recovery plans and discharge instructions to patients and families

General:

  • Adhere to hospital policies, infection control practices, and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, HIPAA, Joint Commission)

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education

  • Maintain accurate nursing documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
