The Special Education Paraprofessional provides instructional, behavioral, and personal support to students with disabilities under the direction of a special education teacher or other licensed school professional. The paraprofessional assists students in accessing the curriculum, developing academic and social skills, participating in school activities, and becoming as independent as possible in the educational environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesSupport students with disabilities in individual and small-group instructional activities.
Assist the special education teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and classroom accommodations.
Provide academic support in areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, communication, and organization.
Reinforce classroom instruction and help students complete assigned tasks.
Support students with behavioral, social-emotional, and self-regulation needs using approved strategies and positive reinforcement.
Assist students with transitions between classrooms, activities, and school settings.
Help students develop independence, communication, social, and daily living skills as appropriate.
Provide physical assistance or personal care support when required and within the scope of the position.
Monitor student safety and maintain a supportive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
Collect and document student information, including academic progress, behavior, attendance, and other observations as directed.
Communicate relevant student observations and concerns to the special education teacher and appropriate school personnel.
Collaborate with teachers, therapists, administrators, and families as appropriate while maintaining student confidentiality.
Assist with classroom preparation, organization, instructional materials, and learning activities.
Follow school policies, special education procedures, health and safety requirements, and confidentiality regulations.
Encourage student participation in general education activities and promote inclusion whenever appropriate.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervising teacher or school administrator.
Understanding of special education practices and inclusive education.
Experience supporting students with autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, or behavioral needs.
Familiarity with positive behavior support and classroom management strategies.
Ability to adapt instructional materials and activities to meet individual student needs.
Basic computer and documentation skills.
Ability to remain calm, patient, and supportive in challenging situations.
