Unit & Patient Population
Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4–6, depending on acuity
Common patient types include:
Cardiac patients
Post-pneumonia
Post-cath lab
Seizures
ETOH/CIWA protocols
Pacemaker patients
Monitor tech available 24/7
RNs must independently read and interpret telemetry
RNs are expected to print strips, perform measurements, and identify rhythms
RT available 24/7 and assigned to the unit
RT manages BiPAP, Airvo, trachs, and respiratory treatments; RNs should be able to troubleshoot equipment appropriately
Required Qualifications
2+ years of Stepdown/PCU experience required
Strong cardiac monitoring experience
Comfortable managing and titrating cardiac drips
BLS required
ACLS required
Active RN license

Staffing & Scheduling
Day-shift charge nurse generally does not take an assignment unless needed
Night-shift charge nurse may take a lighter assignment
Patient care techs assist with ADLs, vitals, bathing, toileting, feeding, repositioning, call lights, and blood sugars
Travelers may float to any inpatient unit
Travelers are first to float
Self-scheduling is allowed, but schedules are not finalized until the schedule is completed
Orientation: 2 days general orientation + 1 day with a preceptor
