Job Title: Sterile Processing Instrument Technician Profession: Clinical - Allied - IPC Specialty: Central Sterile Technician Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Evening Hours per Shift: 7.5 hours Experience: Minimum six (6) months preferred License: Certification as a CRCST through IAHCSMM or as a CSPDT through CBSPD Must-Have: - High school diploma or equivalent required - Extended coursework in sterilization techniques required Description: The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician inspects, decontaminates, disinfects, sterilizes, and assembles surgical and patient care reusable instruments and equipment. This is done following prescribed procedures and techniques documented in the Central Sterile Policy and Procedure Manual. The technician is also responsible for the collection of soiled instrumentation from various units and the redistribution of sterilized items. Primary Responsibilities: Operate sterilizers, washer/disinfectors, and ultrasonic cleaners according to manufacturer specifications. Maintain accurate records of the sterilization processes and parameters associated with the sterilization cycles. Regulate and adjust sterilization parameters related to cycle selection, cycle pressure, cycle time, and temperature. Perform biological and chemical monitoring tests on all sterilizers and High Level Disinfectors by policy and relevant standards. Interpret and maintain accurate records of the results. Inspect sterilized packages and trays for damage or wet packs and take corrective action prior to transporting to the operating room or other areas. Assemble and perform quality control checks for all instrument trays used for surgery. Reprocess instruments and equipment according to established guidelines. Operate washer/sterilizers, autoclaves, and sterilization machines. Decontaminate instrument trays, clean sterilizers, and maintain sterilization records. Follow appropriate techniques for the care and handling of special instruments and scopes. Promote a safe environment through the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety precautions. Keep the work area clean and orderly, maintaining a quiet and attentive work environment. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge and Skills: Display good inter and intra-departmental communication skills. Make sound decisions based on the criteria set forth in the Policy and Procedure Manual. Develop an acute sense for detail in every aspect of sterile processing. Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and medical/surgical supplies required. Knowledge of decontamination procedures for all types of instrumentation and equipment. Knowledge of instrument tray assembly and appropriate packaging materials. Knowledgeable of inventory control and proper use and handling of supplies and equipment for cost-effective use. Adhere to relevant regulations relating directly to Central Service. Ability to fully utilize electronic record systems and other relevant healthcare systems. Physical Requirements: Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and walking throughout the working day. Requires the ability to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
