Job Title: Surgical Technologist - Non Certified Profession: Nursing Specialty: Ambulatory Care Duration: 8 weeks Shift: Variable start/stop Hours per Shift: Guaranteed 24 hours Experience: Minimum of 5 years License: Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) Certifications: Preferred Certified Surgical Technician (CST) Must-Have: Ophthalmology skills are required. Description: The Surgical Technologist - Non Certified assists surgical team members during operative procedures. This position involves arranging and inventorying sterile set-ups for surgery. The role includes passing items as needed to the operating team while assisting in preparing and moving patients. Cleaning the operating room is also a responsibility of this position. This is considered an entry-level position. Essential Responsibilities will include the following, and other duties may be assigned. Operating Room Preparation Duties: Prepares surgical suite, supplies, and equipment to meet environmental safety and infection control standards for all personnel and patients. Ensures the integrity of sterile packaging by opening supplies aseptically while controlling environmental factors that could expose equipment. Regularly checks equipment and supplies for proper working order and ensures they are ready for each surgical procedure. Demonstrates techniques of disinfection and sterilization by adhering to center policies and procedures, ensuring a sterile field is maintained. Patient Pre-Operative Duties: Performs responsibilities as a surgical scrub for preoperative care for patients. Ensures that care is individualized to meet the needs of each patient and surgeon. Assists with surgical procedures by anticipating the needs of surgeons and passing instruments. Prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Identifies, corrects, and reports aseptic technique breaks to the appropriate personnel. Assists with patient preparation, transfers, and in counting procedures per established policy. Safety and Infection Control Duties: Adheres to established safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Strictly adheres to aseptic techniques using a variety of supplies and instruments while continuously monitoring the environment. Actively participates in the time-out process and identifies potentially unsafe conditions. Successfully demonstrates competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities. Completes incident documentation timely while identifying potentially unsafe conditions. Other Duties: Participates as a member of the team to promote a positive working environment. Provides training courses and guidance to team members. Maintains, reviews, and orders additional inventory based on procedures scheduled and stock on hand. Assists with room turnover, cleanup, patient transport, and positioning. Makes suggestions for policy and procedure enhancements based on research and results. Competencies: Thoroughly understands all aspects of the job and adheres to all regulatory standards. Possesses practical hands-on experience and a drive to continuously improve professional skills. Understands the functionality of a medical office operation, patient safety, and patient flow. Meets schedules, deadlines, and productivity standards while striving for optimal results. Communicates clearly and professionally in all situations while actively listening to others. Manages difficult or emotional customer situations while meeting commitments. Works effectively with others and balances the team's needs with those of the individual. Analyzes information using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses in potential solutions. Maintains composure under pressure and copes well with demands from others. Displays initiative by volunteering for additional responsibilities and setting challenging goals. Demonstrates creativity and resourcefulness by proposing innovative approaches to work. Qualifications: Must perform essential duties satisfactorily. Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Graduate of an approved course for OR Surgical Technologists is required. Experience: Minimum of one year of related experience or training in a clinical setting with surgical scrub experience. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals. Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic calculations. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed instructions in various situations. Healthcare Business Acumen: Knowledge of the business aspects of healthcare, including patient data safeguarding. Computer Skills: Proficient in Internet software, Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.
