Description: The Surgical Technologist 1 functions in the inter-operative phase of patient care to expedite surgical procedures. This position assists the surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation. The goal is to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, and that required equipment is available and functioning properly. Responsibilities include discussing any special needs with the surgeon before surgery. The technologist scrubs in for surgery in an adequate time for proper preparation of instruments. They prepare the operative site by aseptically cleaning and clipping, as needed. The role involves preparing and maintaining the instrument tables in an organized manner. This is done to avoid damage to instrumentation as well as incorrect needs or instrument counts. The technologist identifies damaged or incomplete trays and rectifies discrepancies immediately. They set up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules. Arrangements include sterile setups of instrument table supplies and equipment required for specific procedures. They ensure the proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during surgical procedures. The technologist performs surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items according to established policies and procedures. They anticipate the needs of the surgeon and the surgical team. The role includes passing sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants during procedures. The technologist holds retractor devices and acts to anticipate and respond to the surgical team’s needs during the course of surgery. They assist the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient. After surgical procedures, they receive surgical specimens following specimen protocol and pass them off the sterile field to the circulating nurse. The technologist assists with placement of surgical dressings to the operative site following the completion of the surgical case. They disassemble surgical instrumentation as indicated at the end of the procedure and appropriately dispose of sharps, fluids, and waste. The role includes preparing soiled instrumentation for proper transportation to the decontamination area. They ensure the cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies for distribution. The technologist cleans the operating room following each case and returns equipment to appropriate storage areas. They follow infection control policies, guidelines, and other regulatory requirements to ensure a safe work environment. The technologist ensures proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use. Successful completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist program is preferred. The role involves occasional exposure to chemical or radiation hazards.
