Description:
Surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures.
They ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
Surgical technologists are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique.
They combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools and technologies to assist in performing invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
They understand the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
They maintain quality patient care during the operative procedure and are constantly vigilant for maintenance of the sterile field.
Essential Functions:
Prepare and anticipate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for usage during the procedure.
Set up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications needed for the procedure.
Perform instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.
Participate in procedure final verification and during the briefing process.
Assist with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies.
Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
Prepare and pass off specimens as appropriate.
Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization, when assigned.
Assist other team members with cleaning the operating room to facilitate turnovers.
Participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
Assist in developing a proper learning environment in relation to orientation and education of personnel and students.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma required.
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.
Prior training required by a hospital, surgical technology, or military program that meets the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the role.
Membership to the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) preferred.
One year of relevant experience is preferred for all roles.
Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred.
Basic Life Support Instructor (BLS INSTR) preferred.
