Job Title: Surgical Technologist Profession: Nursing Specialty: Surgical Technology Duration: 13 weeks Shift: TBD Hours per Shift: Guaranteed Hours not specified Experience: Minimum of 3 years required License: Current CPR certification; DORA registered Certifications: Not specified Must-Have: Completion of accredited school of surgical technology or equivalent clinical surgery training and experience Description: Job Summary: Under the supervision of the OR Team Leader or Charge Nurse, this position prepares and maintains medical equipment, instruments, and supplies for surgical procedures. Assists with surgical patient care under the direction of an RN or physician. Performs duties and tasks outlined in the Job Description: Surgical Technologist published by the Association of Surgical Technologists. Reports to: OR Team Leader Additional Job Functions: Prior to surgery, verifies supplies, equipment, and instruments are readily available for procedures. Pulls case materials accurately and completes checklists appropriately. Communicates any noted deficiencies in equipment or supplies. Prepares the operating room utilizing preference cards and resources to maintain competency levels. Independently prepares the operating suite/sterile field for patients of various age groups for the intra-operative experience. Utilizes concepts of age and developmental stages in interactions with patients and families. Participates in timeout process prior to every surgical case. Performs activities based on principles of aseptic technique, infection control, universal precautions, environmental control, and life safety guidelines. Anticipates needs of patients and surgeons during procedures. Demonstrates critical thinking skills, ability to prioritize activities, and integrate experiences during the scrub role. Under supervision of an RN or physician, demonstrates ability to prepare medications for procedures. Knows routine drugs used intra-operatively, dosages, concentrations, and appropriate routes of administration. Prepares and is knowledgeable about the specific uses of equipment, instrumentation, and supplies used for surgical procedures. Inspects equipment and instruments for defects or breakage prior to and during cases, as well as at the end of procedures. Tags defective or malfunctioning equipment immediately and removes it from service. Ensures equipment incident forms are completely filled out and submitted. Is competent in sterile processing processes and procedures. Differentiates and demonstrates knowledge of sterilization methods required for instruments or equipment. Reprocesses surgical instruments according to manufacturers' instructions for use. Functions independently in all areas of sterile processing, including decontamination. Communicates and ensures that preference cards are accurate and up to date. Works collaboratively with the OR team to ensure accuracy of cards. Acts professionally and respectfully to all members of the surgical team. Demonstrates the mission and values of the organization through words and actions. Applies principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement daily. Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care and personnel issues. Adheres to confidentiality policies. Maintains positive working relationships and fosters a cooperative work environment. Displays honesty and mutual respect when communicating with peers and other departments. Follows through on problems that may compromise effective job performance using appropriate channels. Minimum Requirements: Education: High School Diploma or its equivalent. Completion of accredited school of surgical technology or equivalent clinical surgery training and experience. Experience, Training, Knowledge: One to three years of previous surgical experience in at least two specialty areas preferred. Physical Requirements: Position requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to fifty pounds while administering patient care. Stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching, standing and walking for five or more hours per day. Reaching, grasping, handling, and feeling for five or more hours per day. Visual acuity to distinguish skin tone variations and read telemetry and blood pressure gauges. Audio acuity to distinguish various body sounds and discern sounds made by machinery or equipment indicating dangerous operation. Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures: Environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, sharps, blood, body fluids, various infectious diseases, and radiation. Protective clothing or equipment may be necessary.
