Job Title: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST) Profession: Surgical Services Specialty: Surgical Technician Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day 4x10-Hour Hours per Shift: 10 hours Experience: Minimum two years of experience in surgical technologist role required; travel experience required. License: Valid CA State License preferred Certifications: BLS, CST preferred Must-Have: Proficiency in Ophthalmology, including Cataract and Vitrectomy. Experience in Orthopedics, Client, Robotics, and Ophthalmology. Description: Certified OR Tech needed for surgical services. The requested schedule is four 10-hour shifts with variable start times, including weekends as needed. On-call shifts are required. The Surgical Technologist II participates as a member of the perioperative team under the supervision of a registered nurse. This position performs direct and indirect perioperative tasks for patients undergoing surgical and endoscopic procedures, assisting anesthesia personnel. The primary focus is the scrub person role. The staff member must participate in the planning and provision of perioperative care for patients across all age groups. This position requires flexibility in scheduling as assigned by the Assistant Director of Surgery, with weekend shifts assigned on a rotating basis. Job Accountabilities: Preoperative Functions: Assist in selecting supplies and equipment for surgical and endoscopic procedures. Collaborate with the circulating nurse to prepare the operating room for surgical procedures utilizing the physician’s preference list. Prepare the operating room bed and set up specialty tables. Secure instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Open sterile packages using sterile technique. Intraoperative Functions: Provide scrub services for minor surgical procedures. Deliver competent scrub services for major procedures in at least three surgical specialties. Assist the surgeon in applying casts and splints. Support the circulating nurse during major surgical procedures. Set up specialized surgical equipment under the supervision of a registered nurse. Provide assisting duties directed by the surgeon, including holding retractors, providing camera holding, sponging or suctioning the operative site, applying electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cutting suture material, assisting with staple skin closure, connecting drains to suction, and applying dressing to closed wounds. Assume responsibility for care of specimens and communicate relevant information to the circulator. Postoperative Duties: Assist in transferring patients to postoperative beds or gurneys. Perform operating room sanitation tasks. Clean anesthesia machines and change breathing circuits as needed. Load and operate ultrasonic washers, autoclaves, and sterilizing units as necessary. Technical Subject Matter Expert Functions: Serve as a technical subject matter expert for at least one surgical specialty. Assist with maintenance of physician preference lists and specialty instruments unique to the specialty. Demonstrate competency in operating all specialty instruments and serve as a preceptor to personnel. Miscellaneous Functions: Report defective materials or equipment to the Charge Nurse. Report unsafe conditions to the Charge Nurse or Assistant Director. Maintain clarity in corridors and put away unused supplies and instruments as time allows. Update surgeon preference lists as appropriate and assist with evaluation of specialty instruments and equipment. Assist with employee orientation and perform assigned tasks in a timely manner. Promote patient and staff safety while complying with established protocols. Handle all hospital property with care to avoid damage. Identify opportunities for improving work processes or safety in alignment with care quality objectives. Professional Expectations: Actively participate in continuing education and unit meetings. Demonstrate a commitment to unit and department goals. Adhere to customer service guidelines and organizational policies, including privacy standards. Perform all tasks effectively and efficiently while maintaining care quality. Report for duty on time and complete assigned duties in a responsible manner.
