Description: Certified OR Tech needed for surgical services. The Surgical Technologist participates as a member of the perioperative team. They perform direct and indirect perioperative tasks for patients undergoing surgical and endoscopic procedures and assist anesthesia personnel. The primary focus of this position is the scrub person role. The staff member must be able to participate in the planning and provision of perioperative care for patients of all ages. The Surgical Technologist works on a flexible schedule as assigned. Weekend shifts are assigned on a rotating basis. Preoperative functions include assisting in selecting supplies and equipment and collaborating with the circulating nurse to prepare the operating room. They are accountable for securing instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for procedures and opening sterile packages using sterile technique. During intraoperative functions, the surgical technologist provides scrub services for both minor and major surgical procedures. They assist the surgeon in various tasks including applying casts and splints, holding retractors, providing camera handling, and managing suction at the operative site. They are responsible for the care of specimens during the procedure and must communicate accurately with the circulator. Postoperative duties involve assisting in transferring patients to recovery and performing operating room sanitation tasks. They clean equipment and load and operate sterilization units as necessary. The Surgical Technologist serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one surgical service. They assist with maintaining physician preference lists and demonstrate competency in operating specialty instruments and equipment. They may also serve as a preceptor for personnel rotating through specialty services. Additional functions include reporting defective equipment and unsafe conditions, keeping corridors cleared, and contributing to the evaluation of instruments and equipment. A commitment to continuing education and customer service is expected. The Surgical Technologist should adhere to safety protocols and promote patient and staff safety. They must handle all hospital property with care and seek opportunities for process improvements. Compliance with relevant safety goals and standards is mandatory.
