Description:
The Surgical Technologist II acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to patients undergoing surgical procedures.
This includes a variety of complex procedures by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation.
Under some supervision, prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during surgical procedures.
The role involves passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performing other scrub duties as directed.
Provides surgical support to physicians and patients undergoing procedures in all surgical areas, including some complex cases.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment in a timely manner.
Adheres to all policies and practices for the safe identification and handling of specimens and medications.
Has knowledge of medications and their intended uses in the surgical field.
Is aware of patients' weight and maximum doses of medication when appropriate.
Maintains awareness of patient allergies.
Handles specimens and medications using correct techniques according to departmental policy and procedure.
Provides information related to the care and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment for sterilization and disinfection procedures.
Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments, and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing incisions.
Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for scheduled cases.
Assures all materials are available and in working order and verifies skills in using equipment correctly.
Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation and assisting with standard work and cleaning at the completion of procedures.
Maintains aseptic technique and actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
Communicates and immediately corrects any breaks in aseptic technique.
Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.
Tests equipment prior to use in the surgical field.
Adheres to unit policies regarding equipment maintenance.
Assists with restraining uncooperative or combative patients safely.
Serves as a role model for Surgical Technologist I.
Ability to apply judgment and make informed decisions.
Ability to work independently and foster effective working relationships.
Capable of solving problems and identifying solutions.
Effective in speaking and writing at a level appropriate for the job.
Knowledgeable about normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology.
Understands surgical procedures to anticipate needs and requests from surgeons.
Requests instruments and supplies based on procedures and case progress.
Knowledgeable about computer systems and software used in the functional area.
Familiar with general safety procedures.
Able to use judgment to determine work flow.
Provides appropriate care based on individual needs, taking into consideration age, culture, and developmental issues.
Ability to provide leadership and influence others.
Possesses critical thinking skills.
