They render technical assistance to the Radiologist. They maintain and care for all ultrasound equipment. The technologist prepares and examines all patients, verifying their identity for ultrasound examinations in accordance with established departmental procedures and techniques. This includes obtaining health status and medical history, as well as assessing the patient's cooperation or ability to tolerate the examination. They confirm that the ultrasound examination correlates with patient clinical history and presentation. The technologist informs the physician in charge of any contraindications to the procedure. They operate and adjust ultrasound equipment, perform minor adjustments, and take safety precautions to protect patients and personnel. They report any malfunction to the appropriate person. The technologist communicates with the patient, their representative, and staff. They explain the exam and instructions to the patient and other healthcare providers. They answer questions that are unrelated to specific diagnostic, treatment, and/or prognosis. The technologist develops and/or modifies a procedure plan from health status and medical history, using age and gender-appropriate considerations. They use independent professional judgment to adopt the procedure plan to optimize exam results. The technologist performs exams under general or direct physician supervision as defined by the procedure. They adjust scanning technique to optimize image quality and spectral waveform characteristics. They analyze sonographic findings to ensure comprehensive exams sufficient for a physician to direct patient management and render a diagnosis. The technologist performs measurements and calculations according to laboratory and ACR protocols and guidelines. They minimize patient exposure to acoustic energy without compromising exam quality or completeness. The technologist notifies the appropriate healthcare provider when immediate medical attention is needed. They evaluate the patient's physical and mental status prior to discharge from the ultrasound department. The technologist records diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting physician in rendering a diagnosis and for archival purposes. They provide an oral summary of preliminary findings to the radiologist. The technologist ensures adequate supplies are available for use. They help maintain a clean and safe working environment. The technologist assists in orienting and mentoring new ultrasound personnel. They may answer telephones, schedule examinations, and initiate transportation. They perform other duties as required.
